SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — For years, kite boarders, windsurfers and paddle boarders have had to take their gear and set up on the bay side flats before riding with the wind.
That may change soon. The city plans to create a facility behind the convention center for these water sport enthusiasts.
“We are trying to get a venue on South Padre Island for windsurfing that is world-class,” said Barry Patel, SPI mayor. “There is tremendous interest in this.”
Recently, the City Council voted to create a committee to hash out ideas for the proposed facility.
The Council agreed to create a committee with members from shoreline management and representatives from the windsurfing association.
The cost and size of the facility is still unknown.
Patrick Barrineau, SPI shoreline management director, said city officials have been talking to the silent water sports community on the Island about creating a space where they can prepare their equipment and access environments that are ideal for kite boarding, windsurfing and paddle sports.
Barrineau said the city is identifying possible funding through multiple grants for the facility.
