SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — As thousands of college students invaded the Island this week to party, hundreds also arrived on a crusade for Jesus.
College students from across Texas joined Beach Reach to help spring breakers on the Island by offering pancakes, free car rides and prayer.
“They provide a good service to all of our visitors,” said Bill DiLibero, SPI city manager. “It’s a nice thing for them to do on Spring Break.”
The ministry is a 24-hour free service for spring breakers by spring breakers.
Midwestern State University student Jordan Dillard said on the Beach Reach blog that he spoke to more than 20 people about the Bible.
The ministry has been evangelizing on the Island during Spring Break yearly for more than 30 years.
Beach Reach organizer Buddy Young said about 800 college students traveled to the Island on their own dime this year.
The ministry brought a disaster relief food station to the Island that can make 1,000 meals in one feeding session.
In the mornings from 8 a.m. to noon, the ministry serves all-you-can-eat pancakes at the Island Baptist Church near Whataburger.
“If they are hungry and need food, we feed them,” Young said.
