San Benito trustees recognized for their service

San Benito Schools will join 1,024 school districts throughout Texas to celebrate January 2021 as School Board Recognition Month– “Navigating to Success.”

The challenge involved in providing an excellent educational experience for the many and varied students in the district is a challenge that requires great dedication and creativity in the best of times.

The year 2020, however, was not the best of times as it included a devastating global pandemic that resulted in quite a tumultuous year that required an unusual combination of skills and talents from district leaders. Unexpected circumstances resulted in changes in laws and regulations, and those statewide changes required adaptability, quick problem solving, teamwork, and leadership at the district level.

Statewide, school board members are being recognized for their unwavering committed to public education and the continuing success of all students and schools.  Serving as a link between the San Benito community and classroom, the following school board members were elected to provide the framework for San Benito Schools:

  • Orlando López, President;
  • Sonia Weaver, Vice-President;
  • Janie G. Silva, Secretary;
  • Rudy Corona;
  • Anna Garza Llanes;
  • Janie Lopez; and
  • Ramiro M. Moreno.

“Our trustees navigated through the challenges of a global pandemic.  I am confident that they will continue moving the district in a positive and forward direction,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nate Carman.

“Our trustees and administrative team are committed to the success of our students, staff, and district,” Carman added.

Local trustees chartered a course that helped protectour most vulnerable, while ensuring that academic progress could continue for all students. It was a daunting situation that was met with absolute determination.

“Our trustees, administrators, teachers, staff, student, and parents are working together as a team to ensure our students’ success,” said Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services Sara Alvarado.

“Each member of this vital team has shown their commitment to forging through and overcoming the challenges of an unprecedented school year,” added Alvarado.

Board service is a volunteer effort, accepted by only a few in the community. It is a critically important job,without pay, that requires an election and then mandated training. It is a responsibility that takes time, dedication, and careful decision-making.

School board members are the largest group of elected officials in the state, numbering more than 7,000 statewide. They are farmers, doctors, business owners, retirees, and young professionals. They are people you see in the store, at the game, and in your neighborhood. They are often overlooked, but their contributions cannot be overstated. They are shaping tomorrow.

Take a moment to recognize your local trustees. Take a moment to honor the work they are doing to help your students sail into the future.
