Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris touched down at McAllen International Airport at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Harris deplaned shortly afterward and took a couple of questions from reporters on the tarmac.
“Hi guys. It’s great to be here in the Rio Grande Valley… ” she said as she greeted reporters.
Harris was asked about flipping the state and if that was the reason for the attention on Texas. She said her focus is on every state and earning the vote.
Asked why she visited South Texas, Harris replied: “Because there are people here who matter, people who are working hard, people who love their country and we need to be here and be responsive to that.”

Arriving shortly thereafter at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Edinburg campus for an outdoor events, the U.S. senator from California told the crowd of supporters: “You are going to make the difference. This election is about you. I’m so happy to see you.”
Harris also spoke of the COVID-19 deaths among Latinos and the disproportionate rates of diabetes and hypertension among the demographic.
At one point, attendees in front of the stage chanted, “Kamala, Kamala, Kamala,” and she turned to them and said, “you said it correctly.”
On immigration and the need to create a pathway to citizenship, she reminded of The Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy that made national headlines in the Valley.
“When this administration has orphaned 545 children because of a policy that has been about seperating children from their parents at the border, everything is at stake,” she said. “When we are looking at the fact that 200,000 of our frontline workers have been Dreamers who were promised DACA protection, everything is at stake.”
