San Benito NJROTC named Distinguished Unit for 2019-2020 school year

SAN BENITO — From completing school work and training for competitions to lending a helping hand with community events and volunteer work, these students’ dedication has proven to be successful.

The San Benito NJROTC unit was named a Distinguished Unit for the 2019-2020 school year by the NJROTC Area-10 manager.

This is the ninth time within the past 10 years that the unit has received this national recognition.

In a yearlong assessment spanning from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020, the unit achieved the seventh highest score out of 62 eligible units within Area-10.

Chief Timothy Wilson said he and all of San Benito CISD’s NJROTC instructors are very proud of the cadets.

“ It goes back to hard work. We tell them if they put in hard work there’s rewards,” Wilson said. “This is one of the big rewards because it’s not only on the cadets. It represents our community.”

In addition to being named a Distinguished Unit for the school year, the unit was one of 12 schools in Area-10 to be designated a Naval Honor School.

This title is earned by schools that have cadets with high scholastic achievement records and other forms of outstanding academic performance and leadership potential.

This school year, the cadets completed 2,802 hours of community service in San Benito and 1,840 hours of service with San Benito CISD school events.

“ Community service has always been one of those big cornerstones for us that we really try to emphasize with the students not just to better themselves and the community, but to also help them later on down the road,” Wilson said.
