COMBES — A 20-year-old woman has been arrested after officers found an unresponsive 1-year-old at home.
The Combes Police Department responded Tuesday to a house at 4506 Business 77 in reference to an unresponsive boy.
According to a press release, when officers arrived at the residence, they discovered the boy was not breathing.
Officers performed chest compressions until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Officers later learned Amayrani Martinez had left her son and a 2-year-old sibling under the care of her 11-year-old sister.
The girl had fallen asleep while waiting for the infants to take a bath.
Eventually, she woke up and found the 2-year-old had been able to climb out the bathtub but the 1-year-old was unconscious.
Without a phone, the girl went to a neighbor to ask for help.
As the boy was transferred to a hospital, Martinez arrived and told officers she had left the infants with her sister as she went grocery shopping.
Martinez was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child, a second-degree felony, and two counts of Endangering a Child, a state jail felony.
Child Protective Services was dispatched to the location, according to the press release, and turned over custody of the children to an adult family member that does not reside with Martinez.
Police were informed Wednesday morning the child survived and is expected to recover fully.
Bond was set at $8,000 for the second-degree felony, and $10,000 for the two counts of Endangering a Child.
