Hands and hearts

SAN BENITO — From food and shelter to local transportation and supportive services, La Posada Providencia provides aid to immigrants, asylum seekers and asylees on a daily basis.

Consequently, providing these services requires a need for funds.

The shelter will host its 10th annual Hands and Hearts Brunch and Auction fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 8.

The fundraiser will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at La Sierra Event Center at 3742 N. Expressway 77 in Harlingen.

In addition to a brunch and auction, the event will have door prizes, live entertainment and other gala activities.

According to organizers, proceeds made from the event will benefit the nonprofit’s general funds for hundreds of men, women, children and families who seek shelter at La Posada Providencia.

Tickets cost $45 at the door or $40 if purchased days prior to the event.

According to La Posada Providencia Executive Director Magda Bolland, the Hands and Hearts Brunch is the nonprofit’s main fundraiser.

“The fundraiser is a lot of fun,” Bolland said. “We have been doing this for years and this year is extra special because La Posada also celebrated 30 years of service in December 2019.”

Bolland said she believes it’s important for the community to support their local nonprofits.

“Attending fundraisers is a good way to support any cause that they feel passionate about,” she said. “If they feel passionate about immigration and asylum seekers, then they should definitely attend our fundraiser and if not, continue to support other nonprofits in local communities.”

According to Bolland, the goal for this year’s fundraiser is to collect $80,000.

“Our buildings are a little bit old and sometimes you need money for repairs,” she explained. “Pretty much it helps us to keep going and keep our doors open so the impact is huge for us.”
