Harlingen's next healthy community event

HARLINGEN — Health and wellness continues to be a main topic for the Harlingen community.

A walk with the Harlingen Fire Department is coming up Saturday from 8:30 to 9:15 by the trail close to the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum.

According to Joel Garza, Special Projects Director for the City of Harlingen, it is a partnership with the organization Healthy Harlingen to offer walks every weekend along with a community leader.

The purpose is to stay active while also participating in the It’s Time Texas challenge.

“This year Healthy Harlingen and the city partnered up to develop a ‘Walking with’ series. We started off with walk with the city manager and this week is walk with the fire department,” Garza said.

“For the next seven or eight weeks we are going to have every weekend a walk with different community leaders,” Garza said.

After the weekend walk the next will feature the Harlingen schools superintendent, a walk with TSTC, one with the Harlingen Police Department and a walk with the mayor.

“This hopes to bring health and wellness awareness but it also coincides with It’s Time Texas community challenge. For the past two years or three we have been placing either first or second place,” he said.

According to Garza, these events are a helpful way to participate in the challenge.

“To make sure we step up our game we wanted to develop these events,” he said.

The challenge ends March 1 and until that date, a walking event will happen during the weekend.

“Everyone is welcome to show up and go in, no registration required. We want folks to know the different parks and trails the city of Harlingen has to offer,” he said.

They are 30-minute walks, which Garza said is the recommended exercise time by doctors.

“If folks want to know more information they can follow the City or the Healthy Harlingen Facebook page,” he said.
