The Cameron County Historical Commission invites the public to its annual meeting at 2 p.m. today at the 1877 Red Star Store, 1244 E. Washington St., Brownsville, TX. Come learn about the Commission and its activities and visit this historic 19th-century building, located in downtown Brownsville near Market Square. The building is currently undergoing restoration and you’ll have the opportunity to discover its interesting history.  For more information call 956-345-4756.

The Pan American Round Table of San Benito/Harlingen, a non-profit organization is hosting its annual scholarship fundraiser, a Traditional Christmas Tea, “Noche Buena,” on Saturday, December 14, from 11:30 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. in the Texas Room at Golden Palms. Guest speaker will be Denise De Los Santos, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, UTRGV and musical entertainment will be provided by Carlos Cañas. Donation is  $25.00/pp and all proceeds will be dedicated to funding scholarships in 2020 to students from Harlingen High School, Harlingen High School South, and San Benito High School. The Harlingen Public Library’s Adult Programming Calendar for December is out and there are a variety of free classes and activities for the family! Events happening this week include:

  • Monday, December 9, Frontera Quilt Guild meeting, 6 to 8 p.m. in the library auditorium.
  • Wednesday, December 11, Knifty Knitters, 10 a.m. to noon in the Quiet Room.
  • Wednesday, December 11, Annual Winter Wonderland Event with fun activities for the entire family – 5:30 – 8 p.m. in the library auditorium and courtyard.
  • Thursday, December 12, Arroyo Colorado Audubon Society Meeting, 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the library auditorium.
  • Saturday, December 14, Family Games, 2 to 4 p.m. in the library auditorium.

The beautiful “Christmas Tree Forest” created by individuals and community organizations, and the festively decorated historic buildings at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, 2425 Boxwood St. are open for your enjoyment through Sunday, December 29. Museum hours are: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.to 4 p.m., Sunday from 1 to 4 PM, and closed on Mondays. On December 19 and 26, the museum will remain open until 8 p.m. for two fun nights of crafts! Enjoy decorating your own Christmas cards and coloring your very own calendar for the New Year. Harlingen is offering free walking tours of its historic downtown on Saturday mornings this fall and winter through March 30, 2019. These popular tours depart from J & B’s Café, 204 E. Jackson, at 9:00 a.m. and last approximately 90 minutes.  You should dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and be prepared to have fun! Even locals are amazed and entertained by what they learn!  The tours are free and open to the public weekly, except on the first Saturday of each month, which is Jackson Street Market Days.  Free group tours also are available by appointment for schools, churches, RV Parks, etc.  For more information, contact the Harlingen Downtown office, (956) 216-4910.
