SAN BENITO — Cadets from the Greyhounds’ Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit are continuing to conduct a multitude of service for their community.
From sweeping and mopping to cleaning and organizing food pantry shelves, 37 cadets spent their Saturday mornings volunteering at the San Benito Food Pantry.
In addition to their hours of help at the food pantry, the cadets donated 420 food items and $80 to the nonprofit.
Throughout October, several cadets had been working individually to gather the items and monetary donations for the food pantry to assist with the upcoming holiday season.
San Benito Food Pantry President Forest Walker said she was extremely grateful for the cadet’s donation and help getting the pantry ready for the upcoming weeks.
“They did such an awesome and fabulous job,” Walker said. “They’ve been helping the food pantry for a couple of years and my heart is so appreciative of them.”
According to Walker, the cadets’ donations are going to help the food pantry a lot for Thanksgiving.
San Benito NJROTC Unit Chief Timothy Wilson said he and the instructors are very proud of the cadets.
“We know how important the San Benito Food Pantry is to the community especially for the upcoming holidays,” Wilson said. “So the NJROTC unit is very proud to help Mrs. Forest, the volunteers and especially the San Benito Food Pantry.”
Since the beginning of the school year in August up to yesterday, the cadets have completed 1,479 community service hours.
