Top 10 teams prepare for playoffs

Week 11 is in the books as playoff qualifiers across the state prepare to embark on their journey into the postseason.

Each team in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll earned a spot, so they’ll be playing on.

McAllen Memorial (two first-place votes, 73 points) finishes the regular season with the top ranking, as the Mustangs went 9-1 on the year, 6-1 in district, earning a share of the District 30-6A title. The Mustangs will take on Laredo United South in the first round of the playoffs.

The District 32-6A champion Harlingen High Cardinals (two first-place votes, 68 points) hold on to their No. 2 spot from last week. The Cards (9-1) went a perfect 5-0 in district action and are set to play host  to Edinburg Vela on Friday in a bi-district playoff matchup between two top 10 teams.

No. 3 Sharyland Pioneer (three first-place votes, 65 points) won its ninth consecutive game in Week 11 and clinched the District 16-5A Division II championship outright. The Diamondbacks welcome San Antonio Southside to Richard Thompson Stadium in the first round.

The Weslaco East Wildcats (55 points) jumped up one spot to No. 4 in this week’s poll after their overtime win against Edinburg Vela. The Wildcats (7-3, 6-0) won the District 31-6A championship and will take on Harlingen South in bi-district.

La Feria (1 first-place vote, 41 overall) finished its undefeated regular season one week ago but still moved up one spot. The Lions have a first-round matchup against La Vernia on deck.

No. 6 Weslaco High (8-2, 5-1) bounced back from a Week 10 loss to finish as the No. 2 seed in District 31-6A, setting up a first-round clash with Los Fresnos.

Edinburg Vela drops three spots to No. 7 this week after its overtime loss to Weslaco East. The SaberCats (7-3, 4-2) finished as the No. 3 seed in 31-6A.

No. 8 Mission High (8-2, 6-1) jumps back into the top 10 thanks to a blowout win over La Joya High that clinched a share of the District 30-6A championship. Mission High will take on Laredo United in the opening round of the playoffs.

Coming in at No. 9 are the Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots after an 8-2 season and a share of the District 16-5A Division I championship. The Patriots are set for battle against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, a rematch of last year’s third-round playoff matchup that took place in the Alamodome.

Rounding out the top 10 are the PSJA High Bears, a group that won a share of the 30-6A title. PSJA High put together a 7-3 regular season record and will face Eagle Pass in Round 1.

Other teams receiving votes are Rio Grande City (11), San Benito (8), La Joya Palmview (4), Los Fresnos (1) and Raymondville (1).
