La Feria ISD celebrates students

LA FERIA — Complimentary goodie bags, books to choose from and pizza were just some of the rewards received by students of the month from La Feria ISD.

Superintendent Cathy Hernandez holds a special event every month where she has lunch with children that have been nominated by their teachers for student of the month.

One student from each grade and from each school in La Feria ISD gets to spend their lunch at central office and receive a certificate where they are congratulated for their work and effort.

“We have been doing this for 10 years and I think it is a great way to interact with the students as well as let them know we appreciate their hard work,” Hernandez said.

According to Hernandez, she has been a part of the district long enough to have taught the parents of her newest students of the month.

“I have one student here that I used to teach his dad in the fourth grade. It feels great to be able to reunite with them during parent-teacher nights and take pictures to show the unity in the district,” she said.

Children ranging from first grade to high school watched a video that profiled Hernandez and her background, received a certificate from her and enjoyed pizza while watching career oriented videos.

“We want to encourage them to continue working hard and reaching their goals. Attending college is one of the main things we will encourage, which is why we include the videos during lunch,” Hernandez said.

Joaquin Trevino, 13, has attended the student of the month event several times now and said he feels appreciated by the school district.

“I’m not sure how many student of the month lunches I have attended. I enjoy coming; I try to pay attention in class and do my work on time, which I think is why I am chosen,” Trevino said.

“My advice for younger kids is to follow the rules and work hard,” he said.
