City to host flood disaster assistance public forum

Hundreds of victims of the June floods have learned they’ve been denied FEMA assistance to repair their homes, businesses and other properties and many do not realize they can appeal the ruling.

The City of Harlingen, FEMA, the Small Business Administration, and the Texas Department of Emergency Management will hold a public forum on Thursday, Aug. 8, to answer resident’s questions regarding disaster relief efforts.

The forum will be held at Casa de Amistad, 1204 Fair Park Blvd., from 6 to 8 p.m. so residents can ask questions about the FEMA assistance application process, what options are available for those who have been ruled ineligible and what other assistance is available.

Residents only have 60 days to apply for FEMA help from the day the disaster declaration was signed, which was July 17.

You can register by phone by calling 1-800-621-3362, online at DisasterAssistance.gov for English and DisasterAssistance.gov/es for Spanish or by visiting the Cameron County Disaster Recovery Center located at 1001 Pancho Maples Dr. in La Feria.
