Upcoming food drive to benefit San Benito Food Pantry

SAN BENITO — While taking a trip to the store this weekend, members of the community will be able to lend a helping hand to local families in need of food.

The San Benito Chamber of Commerce and the San Benito Rotary Club are teaming up to help the San Benito Food Pantry collect food and monetary donations.

The organizations will be stationed Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at A&V Lopez Supermarket and Walmart in San Benito to collect monetary donations and food such as canned goods and cereal.

There will also be team members collecting donations at Mike’s Supermarket in Rio Hondo.

All food and monetary donations will benefit the food pantry in San Benito.

San Benito Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Megan Trevino said she hopes everyone can rally together to support the food pantry.

“We’re really trying to help them because we know they do a lot for our community,” Trevino said. “We’re trying to continue supporting everyone in the community so overall our community is at its best.”

The need

According to San Benito Food Pantry President Forest Walker, the organization gives food to more than 5,000 San Benito and Rio Hondo residents per month.

“We serve every single Wednesday, and we have different people every week,” she said. “That’s why it’s so important for these organizations to either do a monetary donation or a food drive.”

Since kids are out of school right now for the summer, Walker said it’s an especially great time to donate because families are in need of more food.

“Whether it’s $1 or $100, give what you can give,” Walker said. “We are thankful for it all.”
