Cinco de Mayo ready

HARLINGEN — A night of tacos, dancing and music is ahead.

A fun Friday night of activities is being prepared for all ages to enjoy on May 3 at Gutierrez Park to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

The event commemorates the Batalla de Puebla, the battle that led Mexico to drive French rule out of the country.

The free event runs 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include food vendors with a variety of choices, from Mexican food to pupusas and an artisan market. It will also feature Mariachi 7 Leguas, Joel Trevino Jr. from the Mexican show La Voz kids and Telpochcalli folkloric dance group.

This date has been celebrated in the past but this year there is a special surprise that no one knows about.

“We have a special guest opening the ceremony. No one knows about it but we are sure that attendees will love it,” said Janie Rea, marketing and events manager of the Harlingen Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Besides the surprise guest, we have added the artisanal market as our newest addition to bring something different and bring more cultural awareness. This is a safe family event and we invite all of the community to come.”
