Harlingen Police hand out large checks to charity

HARLINGEN — Police Chief Jeffry Adickes handed out two large checks to charity, and awards to the sponsors of the 4th Annual Run with the Heroes race at the recent city meeting.

The race was held in September and hosted by the Harlingen police.

“It speaks volumes to how generous of a community we have,” Adickes said about the outcome of the race and fundraiser.

The event raised more than $10,000, with the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Rio Grande Valley and Humane Society of Harlingen.

Adickes said the event raised enough money to send a terminally ill child on a trip of their dreams with their family.

“I think it is a very important contribution to the Humane Society,” said Lilia Jones, Humane Society executive director, after receiving the check. “It’s a great display of the community and how it embraces what we are doing out at the shelter.”

The funding will help plenty of animals find a home and educate the public what it’s like to adopt an animal.

“It’s a lifetime commitment, they are not puppies and kitties forever,” Jones said. “With this money we can give the animals their shots, we can spay and neuter them and keep them healthy until that day happens.”

She called the sponsors key leaders in the community.

“The fact that the police department has stepped up and taken a huge initiative over the last four years is important,” Jones said. “We are happy to be the beneficiary of that as well.”
