HARLINGEN — Meet Forever Plaid.
The four goofy guys who make up the 50s-era boy band — Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie — have united to pursue their dreams of stardom.
“They met in high school and they may not have been the best but they sang in different places,” said T.J. Faver, who is directing the musical for the Harlingen Community Theater that opens this weekend.
“They’re killed in an accident going to pick up these plaid tuxedos that they ordered,” Faver said.
Not only that, they’re about to play their first gig. But death can’t silence this group of promising singers.
“Somehow, because of everything aligning in place, they’re able to come back to Earth for one last hoorah to perform a concert that they never got to do in real life,” he said.
And a fine concert it is. The program describes them singing in close harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their choreography overzealous precision.
“The ‘Plaids’ are a guaranteed smash, a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles,” says the program.
Faver said the band does everything you’d see on an Ed Sullivan Show.
“They do all these acts,” he said. “Everything is in four-part harmony. It’s just a variety show.”
Faver said the Harlingen Community Theatre decided early this year to present the popular musical.
“We were looking for something that was entertaining and this is a variety show,” he said. “We just decided to do that in November and then in December when more Winter Texans would be around.”
