LA FERIA — Sarah Ramirez held a large sign in hand as she reached out to customers walking into the Dollar General.
She was giving them a message to help children succeed this school year with a donation of school supplies for kids in need.
And her message was received.
The first person she talked to dropped off two shopping bags filled with school supplies.
“I want to help the kids so they can have the stuff they need,” said Sarah Ramirez said, an incoming senior at La Feria High School. “I chose to do community service hours with the police department to help the children have what they need.”
She and other volunteers are helping the police department gather paper, pencils, crayons, scissors, folders, note books and more for the many school children who will need these tools for the upcoming school year.
The police are spending time gathering school supplies for students in the community. It’s the department’s second year holding the Back to School Supply Drive.
The police department will be taking donations at the Stripes stores in town today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tomorrow, Thursday, the fundraiser will move to McDonalds and El Centro.
And Friday and Saturday, they will be gathering school supplies at the police department and Harlingen Walmart.
“We are taking any school supply donations,” said Eliza Rodriguez, La Feria PD sergeant. “It helps the parents meet the school’s demand for school supplies.”
The supplies are scheduled to be handed out at the National Night Out event in August that is planned to take place at the Dome on Pancho Maples Drive.
“We enjoy doing events for the citizens,” Rodriguez said. “We are here for them and we want the community to know that.”
