How sweet it is: Honeys earn trip to IWFA championship

SANTA MARIA — Pack you’re bags, the Harlingen Honeys are headed to Rockport.

After pulling out an impressive 38-21 victory over the favored Weslaco Jaguars on Saturday, the Honeys can finally utter six very satisfying words that many thought impossible at the start of the season: We’re going to the Super Bowl!

Determined to fight through adversity, the Honeys reversed their course on a 0-3 start to the 2018 schedule and are now just one win away from a championship season.

“It means that we proved everybody wrong,” said Ashley Romero. “We started out 0-3 and now we’ve come up with this upset win, and now we’re in the championship. After our third loss we all woke up and came together to play.”

One player that made sure the Honeys booked their trip to the title game was running back Crystal Prado, whose relentless running proved to be tough to stop as she ran for three touchdowns on the evening.

“My main motivation today was for us to win and get to the Super Bowl,” said Prado. “It wasn’t easy, but as a team we got here and we got the win. Communication was the key tonight because we were all on the same page.”

Despite the loss, it was the Jaguars who got on the scoreboard first. Destiny Rios put the Jags on the board early while Diamond De Leon added the team’s second touchdown of the night to give the Jags a 14-7 lead with 10:16 left in the first half.

However, it was all Prado from there on as the Honeys scored three unanswered touchdowns to go into halftime with a 26-14 advantage.

“Honestly, we just corrected our mistakes and began communicating with each other better,” said Victoria Vento. “As a linebacker that is our job is to tell each other what to do and where to go, and that was the key today.”

The Honeys will now face the Texas Legacy, who defeated the RGV Vixens 79-18 in the league’s other semifinal on Saturday.
