The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a heat advisory for the entire Rio Grande Valley.

The advisory will be in effect from noon to 7 p.m. today. Heat indices of 110 to 113 degrees are anticipated.

The NWS reports an atmospheric high pressure spreading across Texas will help build more heat across the Valley. The heat will combine with increase surface humidty due to remaining standing water and high surface soil moisture to bring heat index values to potentially dangerous levels.

The NWS states people spendiing time outside, particularily those cleaning up after this week’s floods, should hydrate before, during and after outdoor activity. They should also take frequent breaks in shady areas. Those who don’t take breaks or hydrate could suffer heat exhaustion or a heat stroke.

A heat advisory is issued when the heat index equals or exceeds 111 degrees for two hours or more.
