Weslaco to activate cold weather shelter at local church

WESLACO — Anticipating temperatures continuing to drop, city officials will activate a cold weather shelter at the local First Baptist Church.

WESLACO — Anticipating temperatures continuing to drop, city officials will activate a cold weather shelter at the local First Baptist Church.

As of noon Wednesday, the National Weather Service has forecast lows around 34 degrees for Thursday, this with wind chill values and north-northwestern winds topping 17 miles per hour, as well as gusts as high as 22 mph.

The lows on Thursday night are forecast at about 38 degrees with wind chill bringing it as low as 30 degrees. It’s not expected get much warmer Friday as the low is still forecast to be 38 degrees.

Located at 600 S. Kansas Ave. in Weslaco, the church will open the shelter from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday and Friday for those seeking warmth from the cold and a roof over their heads. A warm meal will also be provided.

This is also the only shelter to open in the Mid-Valley, with the nearest locations being in Harlingen and McAllen.
