Early voting is off to a slow start in Cameron County.
As of Tuesday morning, just 341 people had cast votes on seven proposed constitutional amendments.
Elections Administrator Remi Garza said it’s true that fewer voters turn out during offseason election years. But those who don’t show up to the polls should reconsider.
“I think these are issues that do require extra time and consideration, so them coming independent of candidates and the other things that surround active campaigns shows how important they are,” he said. “And while I think sometimes people focus on other things in these off years, sometimes some of the most important things, with long-term impacts on how we live in Texas, are being considered.”
But that’s not all that’s going on during this election. There’s also a special election to see whether voters will approve the creation of a Cameron County Assistance District that would utilize a 2 percent sales and use tax for financing its operations within the district. So far, 36 people have voted on this.
Early voting continues across CameronCounty through Nov. 3. Election Day is Nov. 7.
