Clear the Shelter offers free pet adoptions

BROWNSVILLE — Port Isabel will participate in the third annual Clear the Shelters event when adoption fees for shelter pets will be waived today.

The event will be held at the Isabel y Garcia Animal Shelter, located at 262 Woody Lane in Port Isabel, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Oscar Del Abra, supervisor/director of the Port Isabel animal control, said between 53 to 55 pets — dogs and cats — will be available for adoption.

“The adoptions are free. That includes everything, all vaccinations, spay or neutered, plus the microchip,” Del Abra said. “We are hoping to have a good event. Last year, we had 22 animals adopted.”

Nationwide, about 50,000 pets were adopted from shelters that participated in the event.

People who want to adopt an animal from the Port Isabel shelter can live anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley.

Del Abra said individuals seeking to adopt a dog or cat will have to fill out a questionnaire that will be reviewed by shelter workers. He said about 99 percent of the applications are approved. Officials just want to make sure that the animals will be taken care of, he said.

Del Abra said whatever animals don’t get adopted are taken in by humane societies, which then transfer them to other shelters and rescue groups around the United States.

Other Clear the Shelters events will be held at the Laurie P. Andrews PAWS Center, at 2451 N. Expressway 281 in Edinburg and Yaqui Animal Rescue, at 500 Venecia Dr. in Sullivan City.
