HARLINGEN — National Weather Service forecasters have issued an alert to be aware of the potential today for “occasional to frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.”
The alert accompanies a forecast for numerous thunderstorms skipping across the Valley today. Included are Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, Kenedy and Starr counties.
“Slow-moving or stronger cells may produce heavy rainfall sufficient for minor flooding of poor drainage urban areas,” forecasters said.
Chances of rain are 60 percent throughout most of the Valley, and 40 percent in Zapata County.
Temperatures will be significantly lower than the record-breaking heat numbers of last week, however.
Highs in Brownsville should be only in the high 80s today, Harlingen should be around 90 and McAllen’s high should check in at around 92 degrees.
The same weather pattern should continue through the rest of the week, with scattered to numerous thunderstorms with lightning moving across the Valley as moist gulf air covers South Texas.
