Theft suspects caught after chase, ID released

HARLINGEN — Two people have been arrested and police are searching for another in connection with a theft from a local home improvement store.

Yesterday at approximately 3:50 a.m., Harlingen police were dispatched to a theft in progress at the Home Depot located in the 4700 block of South Expressway 83.

As units were responding to the call, they received further information that the suspect vehicle, a red F-250 Ford pickup truck, was leaving the area heading south on Expressway 83.

Officers located the suspects traveling into the city limits of San Benito and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The driver refused to stop and turned onto a nearby canal bank. During his attempt to flee, the suspect high-centered the pickup truck causing it to come to an abrupt stop.

The suspects are identified as San Benito residents Rolando Antonio Guajardo, 33, and Sonny Zuniga, 25. Both were arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, engaging in organized criminal activity, unlawful use of a criminal instrument, evading arrest with a vehicle and evading arrest. Their bonds were set at $72,500 each.

Police says the truck was stolen from a Harlingen car lot over the weekend. In the bed of the truck, officers recovered several barbecue pits stolen from the Home Depot. During the investigation, officers learned that the suspects also took several riding lawn mowers from the business as well.

If anyone has any information on the identity of the third suspect or the location of this stolen property, they are asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 956-425-TIPS (8477).
