Sweet Treat: Freddy’s Frozen Custard to open on Dixieland Road

HARLINGEN — Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers is adding its menu to the city’s restaurant mix.

The new fast-food restaurant is being constructed at 902 S. Dixieland Road near the Target store. The site previously was occupied by La Botana Restaurant and Go with Jo Tours.

The entirely new construction at the site has already begun in what is estimated to be a $350,000 investment. The anticipated finish date for the new restaurant is Oct. 1.

“Harlingen will be the third Freddy’s restaurant for the Rio Grande Valley, following sites in Pharr and McAllen,” said Harlingen franchise owner James Oberg. “We hope to open by the end of the year, and our goal is to hire 85 local individuals.”

The Harlingen location is among a number of new sites being established by Freddy’s in a continuing expansion. The company opened 59 new restaurants in 2016, and officials say they anticipate opening another 70 locations this year.

“Our team opened its first Freddy’s location in the San Antonio area 11 years ago, and since have steadily added one or two new restaurants per year, ranging from Austin to San Antonio, and all the way down to the Rio Grande Valley,” Oberg said. “We look forward to continuing our growth in southern Texas.”

Fast-casual Freddy’s offers steakburgers, hot dogs and chicken sandwiches, along with a variety of frozen custards and sundaes. It now has locations in 30 states and intends to establish locations in three more this year.
