Wanted man in custody after evading police

HARLINGEN — The identity of a man who attempted to evade police yesterday by jumping into the Arroyo Colorado is being withheld until his magistration today.

Police followed the suspect through McKelvey Park as the suspect evaded police by hiding in the river.

According to a statement by police, the man was evading arrest after Harlingen police were patrolling the 1700 block of South F Street and recognized a person whom was believed to have outstanding warrants from Harlingen and Cameron County.

Police said while attempting to confirm the identity of the suspect, he fled from the officers on foot and made his way to the Arroyo Colorado.

Police said after nearly an hour in the water, the suspect exited the Arroyo and again attempted to flee on foot.

Police said they were able to detain the suspect after a brief struggle.

Police said during the arrest and detention, the suspect kicked a Harlingen police officer in the head causing redness and swelling.

The Harlingen Police Officer injured by the suspect was treated by EMS and returned to duty.

According to a police statement, the suspect being charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest, retaliation, and assault on a peace officer in addition to the existing warrants of failure to identify – fugitive from justice and failure to appear and over $3,000 in municipal court warrants.
