Lyford’s Samantha Delgado is ready to run.
While other runners may feel pressure to perform, the Lady Bulldogs freshman phenom is feeling none whatsoever and is simply ready to go at the Region IV-3A meet, which gets underway today.
“At the moment I don’t feel any pressure, I just want to go out and do my events,” she said. “I really don’t know what to expect at regionals, but whatever happens happens. I’ve just got to push and keep going.”
In fact, Delgado’s magic number at regionals is four because that is the number of events Delgado will be competing in. She will participate in the 400-meter relay, the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the long jump.
In the area meet, the freshman was the 200-meter champion with a time of 27.09 and came in second in the 100-meter dash (13.24) and the long jump (15-10.50).
“I’m expecting her to run her personal best in all her events because she should be at her peak by now,” said Lyford girls track coach Marisa Chapa.
Another Lady Bulldog headed to regionals is senior Adriana Liserio, who won gold in the 300-meter hurdles at area last week with a time of 52.46. She will also compete in the 100-meter hurdles as well.
And while this is the senior’s fourth time heading to regionals, she is just as excited as the first time she went.
“I’m a senior and I worked really hard this year, and I feel like I have a really good chance to advance,” she said. “I preformed really well in area, and I was really excited and pumped for that.”
In field events, Summer Castro will look to advance to the state tournament in both discus and shot put. The sophomore won first place at the area meet in the discus with a throw of 93-06.75 and second in the shot put (31-08.75).
“All of these girls are really excited about being here,” added Chapa. “The biggest challenge the girls are facing is being able to adapt to the competition that is here.”
The 3A regional meet will be held today and Saturday at D.W. Rutledge Stadium in Converse.
