Track notes: Lions sending 12 to Region IV-4A meet

For the third consecutive time, the La Feria boys team won the 31/32-4A area track and field meet held at Lions Stadium this past week.

In total, the team is sending an impressive total of 12 athletes in nine different events.

“The kids have worked hard and they know that district and area are steps toward winning a regional and state title,” said La Feria boys coach Evie Sanchez. “That is what drives these boys day in and day out.”

One of the Lions standout performers was Reyes Rodriguez, who won the 800-meter run, 400-meter and was part of the 4×400-relay team that won first place.

“His performances were definitely a confidence booster heading into regionals,” said Sanchez. “That’s what counts this late in the season.”

Another top performer was Julian Trevino, who won gold in the long jump and was also part of the 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams that placed first. Trevino also placed third in the triple jump and in the 4×100.

Marcus Torres also took first in the high jump with a height of 5-11.00.

On the girls side, Tina Sierra ran away with three first-place medals. The senior won first in the 800-meter (2:25.11), 1600-meter (5:35.18) and the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:00.37.

Another standout for the girls team was Dariana Vasquez, who took silver in the 1600-meter (5:35.36) and the 3200-meter (12:02.61).

Lidia Gonzalez also qualified for regionals in discus with a throw of 114-08.

The 4A regional track meet will be held at TexasA&M University-Kingsville this Friday and Saturday.
