Detention Center cadets build home for needy family

SAN BENITO — The modest, small, pink house will soon sit on a piece of property in Brownsville.

But the house has strong ties to San Benito. After all, it was built by 27 students in three months.

This morning the house was dedicated to a Brownsville family in need.

Because of this group of young men, Maria and Agapito Valdez from Brownsville will receive the keys to a brand new, two-bedroom, one-bath, wood frame house.

The cadets are from the Darrell B. Hester Juvenile Detention Center here and the Academy for Rehabilitation and Motivation of Youth intervention program. They are building homes as part of a vocational education program, said Rolando Guerra, boot camp principal.

No other program in the state, which they know of, does this.

The home is scheduled to be moved to the new owner’s property sometime within the next couple of weeks.
