HARLINGEN – The Valley Morning Star has a new sports reporter.
But sports and the Lower Valley aren’t new to him.
Kevin Narro is an Edinburg native who has covered Rio Grande Valley sports for several years as a writer, photographer, reporter and broadcaster.
“I am excited to join the Valley Morning Star sports team,” Narro said on his first official day Tuesday.
He joins longtime sports editor Dave Favila and fellow reporter Freddy Gonzalez. Narro replaces Joseph Tello who had been with the paper since late last year.
Narro brings a wealth of experience and passion for sports to the position in which he will cover local athletics.
“I have covered many games over my career, from Roma to Brownsville,” Narro said. “I began as a broadcaster for KATZ-TV in Edinburg, followed by ValleyCentral.com. I also served as the media director for the RGV Whitewings for two years. My most recent stops have been 956Sports and The Monitor.”
Editor Lisa Seiser is thrilled to have a talented and experienced reporter join the editorial staff.
“We are so happy to have Kevin on our team,” Seiser said. “He has some skills we don’t have here when it comes to some social media, audio and video capabilities. My hope is he can be part of taking the sports department and editorial department to new levels.”
Most recently, Narro has been working freelance jobs, including with ESPN, Fox and Sirius radio. He has worked out of Houston with the Texans and New Orleans with the Saints and LSU football team.
“After spending most of my career in the Upper Valley, I’m excited to extend my knowledge in the Lower Valley,” Narro said. “I have covered plenty of games in 32-6A, but it’s safe to say my roots are in 31-6A.
He will be covering various sports and teams at the Valley Morning Star.
“My favorite sports are baseball and football,” Narro said. “I was born a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan along with my love for the Houston Astros. I also enjoy watching the Spurs, but my team has always been the Detroit Pistons.”
In his free time, Narro loves to fish.
“If I’m not fishing, I’m hunting or watching the Cowboys and Astros,” he added.
Narro is the oldest of three siblings. He has two younger sisters, and both his parents are educators in Edinburg.
