Mother charged with child abandonment

PRIMERA — A mother was charged with child abandonment after officers found her child alone in an apartment complex park, police said.

On Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a local apartment complex in reference to a 3-year-old child who was wondering in the playground area.

According to police, after further investigation it was determined that the parents were not in the immediate area.

Approximately 30 minutes later a female who claimed to be the child’s mother arrived.

Police said it was determined that the mother, Marrisa Leighann Moreno, 24, and two other females who were in an apartment claimed they had gone into the restroom at the same time. lt was determined the child had to take a walk down stairs 18 steps and walk more than 250 feet to get to the park where the child was found, police said.

Based on these factors, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Moreno.

She was charged with abandoning/ endangering a child. Her bond was set at $10,000 by Justice of the Peace Mike Trejo.

Police said Child Protective Services was notified and is also conducting an investigation into the incident.
