Post offices to hold passport fairs

The U.S. Postal Service is hosting passport fairs on Saturday at the post offices in Edinburg, Rio Grande City and Harlingen to help citizens better prepare for travelling abroad, according to a news release from USPS.

At the events, citizens will be able to apply for passports without appointments. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis so everyone is encouraged to show up early and bring all the necessary documents. The fair will end once the applicant capacity has been reached.

The fair at the Edinburg Post Office, located at 410 S. Jackson St., will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair at the Rio Grande City Post office, located at 500 W. Eisenhower St., will be from noon to 3 p.m. The fair at the Harlingen Post Office, located at 1502 New Combes Highway, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All fairs will take place this Saturday.

Applicants must bring both a photocopy of and an original document proving their identity and American citizenship. The application requires a recently taken, 2-inch by 2-inch color photograph of the applicant, which can be brought in or purchased there for $15.

Applicants may save time by bringing a completed a application to the fair, which can be downloaded at www.usps.com/passport.

All applicants must appear in person, and minors under 16 years old must bring both parents. If one parent is absent, the minor must have a notarized authorization.

The cost to obtain a passport varies depending on age, current passport status and processing preferences.

Adults must have a check or money order for $110 and minors under 16 years old must have $80. The execution fee is $35 for both.

The expedited processing fee is an additional $60 per application, and expedited delivery fees may cost up to $25.
