BROWNSVILLE — A Cameron County grand jury indicted a Brownsville man Wednesday on a single count of murder, records show.

Jesus Genaro Salas, 37, is accused of punching 49-year-old Hugo Tapia Flores in the face May 26 at the Las Jarras Bar. Police documents state that Flores fell to the floor and hit his head after Salas allegedly hit him in the nose without any warning. Flores spent one week in a coma before dying, police documents indicate.

The bouncer working at the bar told police that when Flores’ head hit the floor “that it sounded like he had been hit by a bat,” according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

The bouncer told police Salas and Flores argued that night after the victim accidentally bumped into a woman who accompanied Salas to the bar, which is located on the 5500 block of Padre Island Highway.

That same witness also told the investigator the men brought up an unspecified incident that occurred eight days prior to Salas allegedly punching Flores in the face.
