Weslaco boxer Brandon Figueroa nearly set a record for punch volume before remaining undefeated with a seventh-round technical knockout of Giovanni Delgado on Saturday.
The 21-year-old competed in a super bantamweight fight on the undercard for the Mikey Garcia vs. Sergey Lipinets junior welterweight bout at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio.
Figueroa (15-0, 10 KOs) faced Mexico City-based fighter Delgado (16-7, 9 KOs) in a fight schedule for eight rounds.
“Credit to his opponent,” Omar Figueroa Sr., Brandon’s father and trainer, said. “He was a warrior, and he hung in there even though he took a beating. He was cut from the nose. He was cut above his eye, and his eye was pretty swollen. He was beat up and bleeding, but he kept fighting. I thought they could have stopped it two or three rounds earlier, but the win is still good for Brandon.”
According to Showtime Boxing, the organization airing the fight in the United States, Figueroa threw 176 punches in the third round.
According to a tweet from Showtime, 176 is “the second most punches thrown at Super Bantamweight EVER in a round.”
The stat shows Omar felt during the fight: Brandon Figueroa dominated from bell to bell.
Delgado finished the fight on his feet, but Figueroa was in the midst of a furious push, landing power punches in bunches during the seventh. The stoppage came at the 1:55 mark of the round.
“He didn’t spar that much, because he hurt his shoulder,” Omar said. “He came out aggressive and put on a great performance.”
