Salazar tosses hat in ring for county treasurer

EDINBURG — A local insurance owner will vie for the Hidalgo County treasurer’s seat.

David Salazar Jr., 38, announced his candidacy in a news release Thursday.

Salazar, a McAllen native, is president of Silverhorn Insurance LLC. He graduated from McAllen High School in 1997 and attended the University of Texas-San Antonio soon after.

He returned home in 2004 and launched his own insurance company in 2010.

“As a business owner, I know what it takes to run a successful business,” Salazar said. “The values I instill in my office are honesty, responsibility and integrity. These are the same values I will use as Hidalgo County treasurer.”

Salazar is just one of a few who are vying for the seat that is being vacated next year by current county Treasurer Norma Garcia, who announced earlier this year she would not be seeking re-election.

The treasurer is charged with the receipt and custody of all county money, as well as the disbursement of it to vendors and employees — digitally and via check.

“When elected, I will strive to keep the same professionalism, integrity, and honesty as primary principles of the office,” he said about his business approach. “And that is my promise.”

Salazar currently sits on the boards of several local organizations, such as the Cub Scout Pack 500 and the Independent Insurance Agents of the Rio Grande Valley.
