PSJA ISD continues Summer Meals program

PHARR – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD is continuing to offer its Summer Meals Program, helping feed thousands of children 18 years and younger at more than 59 school and community sites throughout the summer.

The Summer Meals Program, in partnership with the Texas Department of Agricultural Commission (TDA), ensures all children have a healthy breakfast and lunch during the summer months when most are out of school. Currently, meals are available at most PSJA elementary, middle school and high schools that host summer school programs and additional locations throughout the community.

This is the second year PSJA ISD also offers “Meals on the Go” by having two school buses deliver lunch and supper meals to about 18 community locations daily.

According to PSJA Child Nutrition Director Imelda Palacios initiatives like the Summer Meal Program are important to families in the community. While the TDA only requires district to serve meals for 30 days in the summer, PSJA ISD will provide free meals until August 18. 2017.

“Many of our students don’t have healthy meals during the summer,” said Palacios. “Providing summer meals helps us make sure that they have access to nutritious meals as they prepare to go back to school.”

Area residents can select to attend a location near them by visiting the PSJA Child Nutrition Dept. web calendar at www.psjaisd.us/kidsmeals, call 211 or 784-8545.
