Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday issued an executive order authorizing the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety to return people arrested in the country illegally to ports of entry on the border.

Checkpoints manned by the Texas Department of Public Safety will soon be added across Texas to target tractor-trailers after more than 50 people died trapped inside one of them during a botched smuggling attempt near San Antonio on Monday.

WESLACO — Gov. Greg Abbott announced Friday he would halt the enhanced inspection policy that wreaked havoc on commercial traffic along the U.S.-Mexico border and led to the shutdown of the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Department of Public Safety will immediately cease enhanced inspections of Mexican commercial vehicles crossing into Texas from Nuevo Leon. However, troopers will continue the inspections at ports throughout the Rio Grande Valley and elsewhere across the border.

Greg Abbott is facing bipartisan backlash for the inspection policy he initiated that sparked a protest by Mexican truckers frustrated by the dayslong crossing delays it has caused.

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed the chief of the Pharr Emergency Medical Services department to weigh in on emergency health care issues throughout the state.
