McALLEN — The rematch has been set.

The race for who will preside over the 332nd state District Court in Hidalgo County appears to be headed to a runoff as election results continued to trickle in Tuesday night.

Nearly two years after a showdown grabbing the national stoplight, U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Brownsville, and former U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores are locked in a rematch in November’s general election after she defeated a crowded field of challengers in the Republican primary.

Eight state district judicial seats appeared on Super Tuesday’s Cameron County Democratic primary ballot, and four on the Republican ballot.

The Democratic primary for the top lawman for the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office was tight Tuesday night with no candidate taking more than 50% of the vote with 70% of precincts reported.

McALLEN — The 2024 Democratic and Republican primaries kicked off Tuesday as voters across the Valley headed to the polls to cast their votes.

Hidalgo and Cameron counties combined for over 58,000 ballots cast during early voting but were still behind the numbers in the last presidential primaries with both counties experiencing a decrease in Democratic votes and an increase in Republican votes.

Voter turnout during the 2020 presidential primary’s first nine days of early voting remains ahead of the number of ballots cast thus far this year, according to Hidalgo and Cameron counties’ elections data.

McALLEN — A political advocacy group that has had success passing $15 minimum wage efforts in the cities of Edinburg and Alton now has its sights set on new goals in Hidalgo County’s largest city, McAllen.

Hidalgo and Cameron County combined for over 4,500 ballots cast on Tuesday, the eighth day of early voting.
