LOS FRESNOS — Corpus Christi Veterans overcame a seven-run first inning deficit to take down Weslaco East 14-13 in Game 1 of a Region IV-5A area round playoff matchup Thursday at Los Fresnos High School.

The Eagles lead the best-of-three second round series 1-0. Games 2 and 3, if necessary, will be played at noon Saturday at Alice High School.

A leadoff homer by Xavier Perez put the Eagles ahead 1-0 early, but that was just the start of the fun.

The Wildcats answered with an eight-run first to take the lead and create separation on the scoreboard. Jorge Zavala hit a two-RBI double, Caleb Escamilla and Joseph Perez each drove in one run, a bases loaded walk scored one more and Alex Solis ended the inning with a powerful three-run blast to left field.

The Eagles soared back during the top of the third with an 11-run inning on eight hits, four errors and a passed ball to reclaim the lead 12-8.

Weslaco East responded immediately with five runs to pull in front 13-12 after three complete innings. Solis hit a two-RBI double and Michael Brown, Antonio Balboa and Nate Rivas drove in a run apiece.

Corpus Christi Veterans finally broke through during the sixth inning with one run on an error and another on an RBI single by Aiden Scott.

Trailing 14-13 with three outs to play, Weslaco East put a runner on second but couldn’t bring him in as two strikeouts and a popup ended the game.

The two teams combined for 27 runs, 24 hits and 16 errors.

Alex Solis led the Wildcats by going 3-for-5 with five RBIs, one home run and two runs scored. Michael Brown and Antonio Balboa each went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Jorge Zavala finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.

Tanner Johnson led the Eagles with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Scott finished with two RBIs.
