East Valley boys powerlifters compete at state meet

The Texas High School Powerlifting Association held its state meet Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, and the East Valley was well represented.

Brownsville Lopez senior Erick Estrella was the top finisher, taking home a silver medal in the Division I 114-pound weight division. Estrella lifted a total of 1,005 pounds by completing a 415-pound squat — the best in his weight class — a 205-pound bench press and a 385-pound deadlift.

Los Fresnos had four lifters qualify for state. Isaac Alanis took fourth place in the 275-pound weight class. Anthony Elvir, Alan Torres and Luis Rivera finished sixth, ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 198-pound division.

Brownsville Hanna’s Jose Castelan earned a fourth-place finish in the 198-pound weight class and lifted a total of 1,610 pounds. Josh Madrazo of Brownsville Veterans Memorial also competed in the 198 group.

Brownsville Rivera senior Mathew Garza took ninth place in the 220-pound weight class. Oscar Sauceda from Brownsville Porter clinched a sixth-place finish competing in the 242-pound class. Harlingen South junior Caleb Davis lifted a total of 1,615 pounds and finished sixth in the 308-pound weight class.

Port Isabel had two lifters qualify to compete at the Division II level. Jaden Lopez earned a bronze medal in the 123-pound weight class. He lifted a total of 1,090 pounds, and his 440-pound squat was the best in the weight class. David Hernandez finished fourth place in the 132-pound class.

Rio Hondo senior Hisaac Guerrero claimed sixth place in the 114-pound weight class. He completed a 255-pound bench press, tying for the best in his class and setting a new Division II state record.
