A total of eight high school girls basketball stars representing six schools across the Rio Grande Valley earned All-Region honors from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches on Tuesday for their performances on the court this season.

Edinburg High’s Daysha Tijerina and Harlingen High’s Callie Cervantes were the two RGV basketball standouts who earned All-Region honors at the Class 6A level.

Tijerina was voted the District 31-6A Co-Most Valuable Player with her Edinburg High teammate A’nnika Saenz. The Bobcats’ senior guard left her mark as one of the Valley’s most prolific scorers this season, averaging a team-high 15.4 points per game on 49% shooting from the floor and a 41% shooting mark from deep.

Tijerina also averaged 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game, while leading the Bobcats to their fourth consecutive district championship.

Cervantes was voted the District 32-6A Most Valuable Player after leading Harlingen High to its third consecutive district title, while averaging 9.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

Tijerina and Cervantes also each led their teams to the regional quarterfinals of the state playoffs where they met one another. Tijerina dropped a game-high 24 points, while Cervantes drained a buzzer-beater to send the Cardinals to the Sweet 16 at Bert Ogden Arena.

Sharyland Pioneer and Brownsville Veterans, meanwhile, dominated All-Region selections in Class 5A.

Brownsville Vets’ Caitlin Esquivel netted a spot on the All-Region team after averaging 14.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game on 54% shooting, all team highs.

Esquivel led the Chargers to a District 32-5A championship and an area-round playoff appearance.

Pioneer juniors Jordan Bravo and Natalie Reyes and senior Audry Hornaday all earned All-Region distinctions. Sharyland Pioneer led all Valley teams in All-Region selections and tied with Cedar Park, Georgetown, Liberty and Lubbock Cooper for the most of any 5A teams statewide.

Hornaday was voted District 31-5A’s co-MVP after leading the Diamondbacks to their first Sweet 16 appearance in school history during an electric comeback season after missing her junior year due to a knee injury.

Bravo was named 31-5A’s Offensive Player of the Year after leading Pioneer in scoring, while Reyes was selected as a second team all-district pick. Bravo and Hornaday were also tabbed as 31-5A All-Defensive Team selections for this season.

Donna IDEA’s Maritzah Welton and Lyford’s Damaris Bermudez were the two Rio Grande Valley players named to the Class 3A All-Region team.

Welton earned a reputation as one of the Valley’s top rebounders this past season and helped lead the Titans to an area-round playoff appearance and their first postseason victory in school history during Donna IDEA’s first year of UIL competition.

Bermudez led the Bulldogs in scoring and helped fuel Lyford’s unbeaten run through District 31-3A en route to a district championship.
