East Valley girls compete at swimming & diving state meet

BROWNSVILLE – The East Valley was well represented with solid performances in the pool at the Class 6A state swimming & diving meet in San Antonio.

Los Fresnos sophomore Jada Ashford had a good day in the pool. In the preliminary session, Ashford came in 15th place in the 50-yard freestyle and 14th in the 100 free, where she improved on her seeding time from the regional meet, to advance to the consolation heat in the finals session at 5 p.m.

She improved her time in the 50 free in her second swim, placing 14th in the state with a time of 24.30. She took 14th in the 100 free with a time of 53.55.

Ashford, sophomore Ariana Mancillas, senior Rebeca Osuna and junior Maria Jimena Trevino competed for the Lady Falcons in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, which finished 16th and 15th in prelims, respectively, to advance to the consolation heat.

Los Fresnos’ 200 medley relay finished 16th with a time of 1:57.91—two seconds faster than its preliminary time. The 200 free relay also shaved its time in the finals session, swimming a 1:46.13 to take 15th place.

Los Fresnos senior diver Anapaula Hernandez finished 16th in the 1-meter dive with a combined score of 257.65 from her preliminary and finals session dives.

Harlingen South senior Camille Conlu Lizada swam in the 100 butterfly, finishing 16th in the preliminary session. Lizada turned in a faster swim in the finals and claimed 15th place in the event with a time of 1:03.99.
