Mission Veterans senior wide receiver AJ Gonzaque announced his verbal commitment Sunday to continue his athletic and academic career at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

UTSA is a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school which competes in Conference-USA.

As a senior this past season, Gonzaque hauled in 45 catches for 758 yards and 11 total touchdowns in six games played for Mission Veterans.

Gonzaque was the Patriots’ No. 1 receiver over the last three years and often made highlight reel plays look routine.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football recently listed Gonzaque in its Rising Recruiting Guide which featured the top high school players and college football prospects across the state.

“Gonzaque has lined up all over the field and has even spent time playing quarterback, but he has shown the most upside and college ability as a wide receiver. He can go up and get the ball and is like a running back after the catch,” the recruiting guide says about the Mission Veterans receiver.

A two-time APSE All-State player, Gonzaque finished his high school football career with 149 receptions for 2,731 yards and 34 receiving touchdowns.

As a junior, he threw for 1,288 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 538 yards and seven touchdowns in five games as a quarterback, while also catching 29 balls for 480 yards and nine touchdowns.

As a sophomore, Gonzaque helped Mission Veterans reach the fourth round of the Class 5A playoffs as he had 75 receptions for 1,493 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns in 14 games.

Gonzaque is the third Class of 2021 recruit from the RGV who will sign with the Roadrunners as he’ll be teaming up with former Sharyland Pioneer quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger and Edinburg Vela offensive lineman Ronnie Garza next season in San Antonio.

UTSA’s 2021 recruiting class also earned the No. 1 ranking in C-USA, according to recruiting websites Rivals and 24/7 Sports.

This past season, the UTSA Roadrunners went 7-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play under first-year head coach Jeff Traylor, which ranked No. 2 in C-USA’s West Zone.

Gonzaque, who recently played at AT&T Stadium twice in January as part of the Pylon 7-on-7 All-American Game and the Blue-Grey High School All-American Bowl, is planning to sign a national letter of intent to attend UTSA on Friday.
