Texas freshman right-handed pitcher Aaron Nixon, a McAllen High alum, was named a Perfect Game Freshman All-American, the organization announced Monday.

Nixon was named to the Freshman All-American Second Team as he leads Texas (48-16) with eight saves this season. Nixon sports a 2.35 ERA and has recorded 34 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched. He’s also limited opponents to a .216 batting average.

During his four-year career at McHi, Nixon compiled a 23-4 record, a 0.83 ERA and 315 strikeouts in 186.1 innings pitched, while limiting batters to a .140 average.

Nixon joins fellow Longhorns pitchers Tanner Witt and Pete Hansen as freshmen All-Americans honorees.

MUST-WIN

The No. 2 Texas Longhorns kept their College World Series hopes alive by topping No. 3 Tennessee 8-4 on Tuesday in an elimination game at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, NE.

The Longhorns’ offense bounced back against the Volunteers after a rough outing in their CWS opening loss against Mississippi State that included 21 strikeouts. Texas’ bats came alive against Tennessee with eight unanswered runs to advance to Thursday’s elimination game.

Now, the Longhorns find themselves in another must-win scenario as they head into an elimination game at 6 tonight against Virginia. The game is available on ESPN2.

ONE ‘W’ AWAY

Mississippi State and McAllen Memorial alum Jake Gautreau are one win away from advancing to the College World Series Finals after defeating Virginia 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Gautreau, a fourth-year hitting coach and recruiting coordinator with the Bulldogs, saw his team rally from a 5-0 deficit and a no-hit effort by Virginia with a six-run eighth inning. Mississippi State recorded all of their six hits during the inning as a two-run and three-run home run pushed the Bulldogs in front.

Mississippi State (47-16) now awaits the winner of tonight’s elimination game between Texas and Virginia. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday on ESPN.

The College World Series Finals, which is a best-of-three format, is set to begin at 6 p.m. Monday.
