WESLACO — With some big opponents looming for the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers, they have yet to drop a set in District 32-5A play.

It was another sweep Saturday against the Weslaco East Wildcats 25-13, 25-10, 25-19.

“It was really good, I liked all of our energy,” Chargers co-captain Kassy Garcia said. “We all stayed up, and we were pushing. In the second set, we almost kept them at single digits, which is pretty good.”

The Chargers moved to 5-0 in District 32-5A. Brownsville Veterans went undefeated in district last season. The biggest tests will be later in the month when it plays Brownsville Pace and Edcouch-Elsa.

“So far with the district, they are doing very well,” Chargers coach Sherry Hoskins said. “We have won every single one in three. They are working hard in practice, giving it their all and they are showing it right now on the court every time we play.”

Before the Chargers travel to Pace on Tuesday, Sept. 20, they will face Donna North and Mercedes.

Brownsville Veterans looked in control of Saturday’s match from the start. In each set, Brownsville Veterans built comfortable leads. During the third set, Weslaco East did battled back to move within three points of the Chargers at 22-19.

The Chargers won the next three points to win the match.

“They did well with serves, taking care of the court, letting nothing hit the ground, and if they did they made it up,” Hoskins said. “Overall, they are communicating and playing well as a team.”

Weslaco East is now 3-2 in district. Last season, the Wildcats only won two games in District 32-5A.

“I think we are doing well considering the tough district that we are in,” Wildcats coach Zonya Gorena said. “These girls have been working hard day in and day out. I have a small group of girls due to injury, but we are doing well and fighting every game. That is all I am asking for.”

During the third set, the Wildcats made some strong plays at the net and good defensive plays following hard attacks by the Chargers.

“We were able to try to keep our composure against those heavy hits, that was definitely a positive,” Gorena said. “I was very proud of our middle blockers. We have been working on our touches and blocks. We were able to get a few during this game, big positive there.”

To end the first round of district play, the Wildcats take on Mercedes, Brownsville Pace, Edcouch-Elsa and Harlingen South.
