DONNA — Brownsville Porter remained unbeaten with a 30-14 victory over previous unbeaten Donna North on Friday in the RGVSports.com Game of the Week.

“I am happy for the kids,” Cowboys head coach Carlos Uresti said. “At the end of the day, we do it for them. I am extremely happy for them. This is only the second time that I have been 3-0 as a head coach here at Porter. I think this one is a little bit sweeter because nobody expected us to be 3-0.”

With the game still up for grabs in the fourth quarter, Porter athlete Gunnar Williams weaved through multiple Chiefs defenders from 28 yards to put the game out of reach 30-14.

“It was awesome,” Williams said. “Close game, we had to do something. We were able to go out there and make plays like that. Great blocking from the offensive line, receivers and the quarterback making good decisions led to the touchdown and the win.”

Donna North found hope during the third quarter after going down 23-7. Chiefs running back Andrew Mendoza found room down his sideline and took it 73 yards to cut the deficit to 23-14.

Before the big play, it was all Porter in the third quarter.

An inside run by Porter back Alexis Ibarra yielded 41 yards and put the ball in the Chiefs’ red zone. Ibarra took a screen 21 yards and down to the 1-yard line, setting up the Cowboys to go up 23-7 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

Donna North fumbled its first possession of the second half. Porter recovered the ball at the Chiefs’ 6-yard line. The fumble was caused by senior defensive lineman Samuel Moreno.

“We were doing good, just had to keep on pushing,” Moreno said. “It took us to a win. It feels exciting to make some plays, because all of the hard work, it paid off.”

After the fumble, Cowboys quarterback Alejandro Stevens punched it in from 1 yard to put his team up 17-6.

Williams tied the game at 7 when he sprung free. Williams took his reception 47 yards down the sideline. Porter took the lead in the second quarter with an Adolfo Segura field goal.

Senior quarterback Marco Aguilar opened the scoring for the Chiefs. A high snap by the Cowboys on the punt set up Donna North with great field position at the Porter 29-yard line.

Two straight runs of 10 yards by Aguilar put the Chiefs on the Porter 5-yard line. Aguilar walked in from there to put Donna North up 7-0.
