Former McAllen High pitcher and Texas reliever Aaron Nixon announced Friday on Twitter he is transferring from Texas to Mississippi State.
Nixon, who spent two seasons with the Longhorns, entered the transfer portal after Texas parted with pitching coach Sean Allen on June 20.
“Proud to announce that I will be continuing my athletic career at Mississippi State University! #HailState,” Nixon wrote on Twitter.
Nixon, who is entering his junior year, was named a freshman All-American and All-Big 12 honorable mention after a sensational first year as the Longhorns’ closer during the 2021 season. He led the Longhorns with nine saves and finished with a 2.12 ERA and struck out 35 batters with 10 walks in 34 innings pitched. He held opposing offenses to a .211 batting average.
As a sophomore, Nixon posted a 5.04 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 25 walks in 30.1 innings. He earned five saves in 26 appearances.
Nixon joins McAllen Memorial alumnus Jake Gautreau at Mississippi State, who is entering his sixth year as an assistant coach.
The two faced off during the 2021 College World Series, which Mississippi State went on to win. Nixon pitched against Mississippi State in last year’s CWS with 1.2 scoreless innings.
