Former MLB pitcher, Sharyland alum to speak at All-Valley Sports Award Banquet

The top high school athletes and teams across the Rio Grande Valley will be honored at the 2022 All Valley Sports Awards Banquet from 6-8 p.m. on June 29 at the Edinburg Conference Center At Renaissance in Edinburg.

The Valley’s best student-athletes, coaches, programs and teams will receive 35 awards recognizing their achievements and success in their respective high school sports, as voted on by AIM Media’s three local newspapers — The Brownsville Herald, The Monitor and Valley Morning Star.

Former MLB pitcher, World Series champion and Sharyland High graduate Jaime Garcia is scheduled to speak at the 2022 All Valley Sports Awards Banquet.

Garcia was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Sharyland High. He put together an eight-year career with the Cardinals before spending time with the Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs.

The Sharyland High product was part of the starting rotation on the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series championship team that defeated the Texas Rangers 4-3 in a seven-game series. Garcia, who retired from the MLB in 2019, finished with 70 career wins, a 3.85 earned run average and 925 strikeouts in 218 games.
