Falcons’ Jones, Palafox sign with colleges

LOS FRESNOS — The Los Fresnos Falcons football team will be sending two of their top players to the next level.

Defensive standout Gregory Jones signed with Trinity University in San Antonio. The District 32-6A defensive player of the year is excited to join the NCAA Division III program.

“I could not ask for anything more,” Jones said. “Growing up, it is something that I always wanted to do. Being able to accomplish this is a really big achievement for me.”

Jones is also happy about being able to live in San Antonio. The middle linebacker has family in the area and friends that will be attending school in the San Antonio area.

“It is good to know that I am still going to be around good people, meet new people and develop bonds at Trinity,” Jones said.

Jones will try for the pre-med track while at Trinity. On the field, Jones is listed as an athlete for Trinity and could be moved around.

Offensive guard Jaime Palafox signed with Southwestern Assemblies of God University, a NAIA school in Waxahachie, south of Dallas. Palafox was awarded first-team all-district for his efforts this past season.

“It is one of the best feelings in the world,” he said. “It is not something that I was expecting.”

Palafox’s mother encouraged him to attend a football camp. Once the coaches found about his studious prowess it was a done deal, and they offered the guard a scholarship.

“It was honestly such a surprise,” he said. “Everything has been happening so fast. In the last month I have been offered a scholarship and now I am going to sign. It is really crazy.”

The offensive lineman plans to study criminal justice in college with the hopes of becoming a U.S. Marshall one day.

“I feel blessed,” Los Fresnos coach David Cantu said. “Blessed to see these two young men play the game that they love and to be able to go to college at the same time. Also, to represent this community. I know they will both be extremely successful and not just be on the team, but be leaders on the team as well.”
